Let's Catch Up!!

So it's been a while since I've posted anything with the exception of AR's 6 month update.  Lots has happened over the past two weeks!  Let's catch up!

1)  AR has started turning over really well from back to belly!  This means that naps are a bit more difficult as she turns herself over and gets upset.  I normally have to go put her paci in her mouth a time or two now while she's trying to fall asleep for a nap.  She does sleep on her belly for a lot of naps though.  Below is a time when she wasn't too happy about being on her belly.
 2)  She is sleeping a lot on her side now and I think it's so cute!  We have also removed the bumpers since she's moving and turning now.  I have found that each mom has certain things they are particular about and this is one of mine.  I know many people don't but it was one of those things that just really bothered me and they wouldn't suggest doing it if other babies haven't suffocated b/c of them.  So until she's a bit older, they are out for now.
3)  AR is enjoying reading books more and more.  She also enjoys chewing them just as much if not more.  Daddy is doing a great job reading and uses lots of voice when doing so!
(I don't know why William had out his High School Musical cd?!  ;) )

 4) Two weekends ago we went to celebrate Grandmama and Daddy Mac's birthdays, but I don't have a picture with them.  AR loves visiting with her cousins!
Mimi with all her grandbabies!
Checking out AR
Out for a walk

The Trammell family loves their shades!  Looking too cool!  She really doesn't mind them at all.
5)  We are loving bath time these days.  Because of how the tub is made, AR is able to sit up on her on in the tub.  So we let her play with her duck for a bit now b/c she loves chasing it around in the water.

6)  William and I did our 5K but we didn't run it all completely.  He beat me by a good 6 min though and I'm proud of us for doing it and coming so far.  We are going to be taking a break from running due to the cold weather and having a baby that we don't want out in it.  I need to find something else to do that doesn't cost anything... we'll see.  No pictures though :(

7)  I have my sewing stuff out right now and have been attempting a few new things.  I started out wanting to make a pillowcase dress, but couldn't stop there!  I decided to try pants too...with ruffles.  Below is one of the outfits I'm working on.  I have to go back and do a little work on it as it was rather tight in the waist.  It's been a learning process for sure, but I think I will be making more dresses and pants in the future!
She will be wearing a turtleneck under this once I get one!  Her daddy let me know it was "too revealing"!

6 Months!

Our little girl has been here for 1/2 of a year now!!  How that happened and where the time went, I do not know!  She's growing so fast and we are loving seeing her personality show more and more.  We were able to go to the doctor on her actual 1/2 birthday, Oct. 20, and everything was looking good.
Stats at 6 Months:
Weight:  17lb & 8oz. (80%)
Height:  28.0in (101% off the charts again!)
Head:  44.5cm (93%)

Abby Ruth at 6 months:
-rolls over from back to belly but not belly to back yet
-laughing more and more
-eating two meals a day... we are up to our 5 veggie so far and will start fruits soon
-sits up with support and is starting to sit up by herself for a few seconds
-starting to get a little attached to mostly me, but daddy or whoever is keeping her too
-has two bottom teeth and never let us know they were coming in!
-normally eats 4 times a day and sometimes 5, 2 include the solids and milk
-sleeping around 12 hrs a night
-puts everything in her mouth

As you can see, she is tall!  We are 2 inches away from the next car seat... and we thought this one would last a year!  So I will be starting my research on that very soon so that I can find what I want and then find it at it's lowest price of course!

I cannot believe she's already 6 months old!  Time does fly when you're having fun!  :)

My Two Cents on Baby Food

Having an infant means we are continually entering some new phase/activity/etc...  The past couple weeks we have started on solids.  We've been doing rice cereal for a while and we kind of took our time on the other stuff.  I am attempting to make my own baby food, but I do have some thoughts on it that I will share with you.

I can't remember if the doctor or the book I mostly use told me to start with the yellow veggies, so that's what we did.  First we began with butternut squash that I bought from the store b/c I wasn't sure about cooking the squash or which ones to buy, etc... Then we went to carrots and we are currently on green beans.  She likes the first two but isn't digging the beans yet.  The next two coming up are peas and then sweet potatoes.  I purposely saved the sweet potatoes b/c I know so many babies love them and I wanted her to have the others first before figuring out that some things are sweet!
Above are the green beans, carrots, and peas.  The shiny stuff is the condensation from the hot food.
Ready for the freezer!

Let's discuss making baby food.  I decided that I was going to make most all of AR's food with the exception of when we travel or are out and it's easier to use store bought jars.  So while at Aldi's I bought sweet potatoes, frozen green beans, and frozen peas.  I bought carrots from Bilo too.  I set aside a morning and got to work!  I found my recipes using Pinterest and have shared them to the right under a new page if you are interested.  The beans and peas were super easy!  The potatoes were a bit more work but not bad.  Except when I used my *wooden* spoon to push down the potatoes while the blender was on and it got knicked by the blade and therefore had to throw them away!  :(

I have since made butternut squash and remade the sweet potatoes.  I didn't take any pictures of those, but I did have to use the ice tray method for a few of them b/c I didn't have enough containers.

Here are my thoughts on baby food:
1)  Costs:
     -Peas - $0.99 yielded 14oz = $.07 per oz
     -Green beans - $1.49 yielded 14oz = $.11 per oz
     -Carrots - $1.99 yielded 20oz = $.10 per oz
     -Sweet potatoes (from bilo) - $2.90 yielded 25oz = $.12 per oz
     -Squash - $1.57 yielded appx 26oz = $.06 per oz

While at Bilo today I saw that the baby food jars on sale were about 12.5 cents an ounce, so buying it isn't that more expensive if you get it on sale.  May be worth it for potatoes and squash as they were more work.  I also have to consider that only the squash was "on sale" when I bought it and as you can see the cost was much cheaper per ounce.  Had I used the potatoes from Aldi's my cost would have probably cut in half.  I also could have bought the green beans for a buck today which would have made them .07 per oz.  If you prefer organic or certain brands then the factors may change for you.

2)  Effort
When considering the effort of making baby food and buying it, I must consider both the time and labor it took me to make it as well as trying to get it on sale at it's cheapest and beating out all the other moms from getting it first!  I don't coupon quite like I did before AR but I will def. be on the look out for cheap jars of baby food and stock up when I can.  I will also continue to make most of her baby food with veggies and fruits when they go on sale.

3)  Nutrition
It really doesn't make a difference to me which my baby takes, store bought or homemade, but I guess it is nice knowing what exactly went into the food.  I do make sure to get veggies/fruit that don't have anything else added to it... just straight from the farm, either fresh or frozen.

4)  Tools
I just used my basic $25 blender to make the food.  I think one of those handheld blenders may work better, but I'm not going to go buy one.  Other than that you just need some pots, an oven, and other standard kitchen tools.

5)  Accomplishment
I won't lie, it does make you feel as if you have accomplished something to have made the baby food by hand.  At the same time it's a little time consuming and you have to weigh in your labor when comparing costs to store bought.

6)  Summed Up
To sum it up, I'd say that if you don't coupon and are willing to make the food then it's by far the best choice for you.  It's def. cheaper to make it yourself if you get the veggies/fruit when they are at their lowest sale price.  For me, I will buy it when I find it the same price or cheaper than I can make it.  Otherwise I will continue to make most of it myself.  I may try to do another posts on more food such as fruits later.

That's all I can think of at the moment.  If you have any tips or recipes, I love to hear them.  Once we make the basics, I want to start trying some blended recipes.

Baby Dedication and Birthday

This past weekend was another busy, but special weekend for us.  On Saturday, I celebrated my 27th birthday!  26 sounds sooo much better than 27 for some reason... guess b/c 27 is just 3 years from 30?!  I really can't complain though, I'm one super blessed 27 year old!

My parents were able to come up on Saturday and stay the night with us.  We got to go to the Pumkin Festival in Pumpkintown which was fun.  That evening we ate out at Copper River for my bday, which is one of our favorite places to eat.

Sunday another big day for us as our church had it's Parent/Child Dedication.  This is when we acknowledge that our child is a gift from the Lord and commit to raising them to love and fear the Him.  We were so blessed to have many family member (and friends who are pretty much family) come to the service.  It means so much to us that so many love our Abby Ruth.  And they must really love her b/c they came to the "rock'n'roll" service for her!  ;)

After the service we came to our house and had soup and sandwiches.  It was nice to visit with everybody and for all of AR's grandparents and some great-grands to be there and see each other.  We really enjoyed having everybody here with us!

Somehow we didn't get a pic of just our little family!  Hopefully in a week or so I can get some other pics from my in-laws from the actual service!  I also want to acknowledge that our friend Michelle was there for the dedication but unable to come eat lunch!  Hate we didn't get a pic of her either!

Favorite Toy

AR seems to have two favorite toys right now, one being the Jumper/exersaucer thingy and the other is her "purse".  I've already shown you a clip of her bouncing around and she just spent a whole hour in that thing a little bit ago!  She loves it!

I wanted to take a moment to show you her toy purse that we take with us now on errands and she plays with it at home too.  I think she plays with it so well now that she can use both hands to grab and play.  We have Annette to thank for this toy!
Flipping through it to find all the goodies!
"I'm ready to go shopping!"  (She totally did this on her own)
"Aldi's is boring Mama, when can we go to the mall?"

I also want to share this picture of AR from yesterday.  We went to see Aunt Katie out on the farm so of course AR had to dress for the part as you can see!  While we were there she was loving watching Buddy, Katie's dog.  She'd even make little noises that sounded like excitement to us... it was very cute!

James Island Camping Trip

Last Thursday, the three of us headed down to James Island for our first trip together since AR's arrival.  We got on the road a little later than intended and so we stopped for some Chick-fil-A on the way into the campground and then got the pop-up all set up.  I wish I'd taken a picture of how we had to set up the pack'n'play, but I didn't and I would have been embarrassed of the mess surrounding it anyways!  AR did very well in the camper and I can't wait to go again, just not in the cold though.
I bought this bug net a while back not sure if we'd really need it and it really came in handy.  Misquitos l-o-v-e AR and this helped keep them away!  It was kinda funny looking though.

We went to downtown Charleston on Friday and walked around, ate at Bubba Gump's and then swung on the dock for a bit.  We headed back to the campground around 3 or 4ish and William grilled us some hot dogs and we just hung out there for the rest of the evening.
Diaper changing can happen anywhere!

And mama... who needs to fix her hair!
Hanging out in the camper
Saturday, we went and saw the Angel Oak which was HUGE, but really neat to see.  It's estimated to be between 300-400 years old!  We then headed out to Folly Beach and ate on the dock for lunch.  It was really cold out on the pier so we didn't stay for too long.  We drove around a bit and got back at about 5 and William got set up to watch the Clemson game on his computer.  We ate some spaghetti and watched the game.  What an A.W.E.S.O.M.E game, huh?!  Jennie, I know you disagree with this comment... sorry.  I'm loving tiger football this year.  Cool fact for you:  I had Coach Swinney's oldest child when I student taught and met both him and his wife.
Not quite awake Saturday morning, but in her Clemson sleeper!

On Sunday we got up and loaded everything and "unpopped" the pop-up and headed back home.  On the way home we stopped by Mimi and Papa's house for a late and yummy lunch.

Waiting to head home!

Who'd have thought I'd enjoy camping so much?!
